Fancy threads

Needles, pins, and patterns to Amanda Madden for winning the Audience Choice award in the International Design Challenge hosted by Threads Magazine.

The glossy fashion mag, along with the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals, sponsors the themed contest annually, each year with a different challenge to incorporate. This year’s theme was Quilted Garment Challenge, and the challenge was to design and sew a unique ensemble featuring at least one major quilted garment.

Borough daughter Amanda was inspired by a Hollywood icon and a hit pop song to create her dramatic dress and cape. Her machine-quilted design, embellished with hand-beaded pearls and heat-set crystals, was selected from 25 entries that were judged on the basis of technical mastery and innovative design.

Amanda, a dressmaker and designer who specializes in bridal alterations, is the owner of AMadden Tailoring.

The winning creation will be featured in the June–July 2017 issue of Threads, the premiere magazine in the United States dedicated to fashion sewing — which you can pick up on the stands on May 9.

Standing O sends a measuring tape of congratulations to Amanda on her win.
