She’s a scholar

Tip your tassels to St. Edmund Prep junior Kaelyn Edwards, this year’s recipient of the Jose Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship. Kaelyn was presented the honor at the annual Sports Awards dinner on Dec. 1.

The award commemorates St. Edmund student Jose Rodriguez, who collapsed and died shortly after completing JV Basketball tryouts on Nov. 5, 2011. A member of the Prep family attending St. Edmund Elementary School, Jose was an excellent athlete. The administration created the scholarship in his memory, awarding it annually to the member of the junior class who best embodies Jose’s personable spirit, tireless work ethic, and loyal devotion to the St. Edmund Prep Family.

Kaelyn is a four-sport athlete at St. Edmund Prep and one of the most active members of the school community. She has been a standout on the Brooklyn-Queens CHSAA Champion Soccer team, a guard on the Girls Varsity Basketball team, one of the top swimmers in the Diocese, and a key member of the softball program.

Despite her busy athletic schedule, the Gerritsen Beach native has maintained an overall academic average of 95. She volunteers at many school events and is a member of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.
