With all due respect to the Wizard of Oz, Brooklynites might soon be singing, ‘Follow the green arrow road.’
The BAM cultural district partnered recently with the city’s Department of Transportation on a Temporary Wayfinding Project, in which temporary decals on sidewalks surrounding the Atlantic Avenue subway terminal will guide pedestrians from the subway to nearby arts organizations.
The green sidewalk decals will point the way to participating arts venues include the BAM building, 651Arts, A.R.T/New York, BRIC, the Brooklyn Music School, Irondale Ensemble, Mark Morris Dance Center, MoCADA, and UrbanGlass Brooklyn.
“There is a lot going on in the BAM cultural district,” said BAM President Karen Brooks Hopkins. “We hope that this program will make it easier for our patrons and audiences to not only find BAM, but also find the other amazing organizations in the neighborhood.”
Featuring arrows and text, the decals offer locals and visitors alike the simplest, most direct paths from the busy Atlantic Avenue subway entrance/exits to BAM and the other eight arts organizations.
More than a hundred of the decals were installed Dec. 10 in 21 locations and are expected to remain in place at least six months.
The locations include the main exit at the Atlantic Avenue subway terminal on Flatbush Avenue, and exits from the N, R subway on 4th Avenue and Pacific Street; the intersection at Ashland Place and Hanson Place; and the B and Q subway exit at Hanson Place.
“The Atlantic Avenue terminal is an important gateway to this neighborhood and its signature cultural destinations, but with construction in the area, people could use a little help finding their way,” said DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.
“This creative treatment literally points art-seekers in the right direction and lets our sidewalks serve as tour guides to the different venues just a short walk away.”
