South Shore’s late-game dramatics pay off

It’s starting to become a trend.

The South Shore football team staged its second-straight, come-from-behind victory on Sept. 23, clawing back in the fourth quarter to notch a 24–20 victory over John F. Kennedy in a Public Schools Athletic League city championship division battle.

Jason Martin led the Vikings to the late-game victory with his second touchdown of the night — a three-yard run with 1:53 left in regulation. It was a bit of deja vu for South Shore (2–1), which erased a 14-point deficit against Fort Hamilton in week two. Martin orchestrated both comebacks, leading the offense when it mattered most.

The 6-foot-5 quarterback played through a right-leg injury — after being sacked late in the first half — and helped the Vikings bounce back after Kennedy took a 20–18 lead with just three seconds left in the third quarter.

Vikings sophomore running back Frankie Cullum set up Martin’s game-winning touchdown with a 29-yard catch on third-and-long. Martin finished with 143 passing yards and 94 rushing yards.

South Shore takes on New Utrecht on the road in week four, looking to notch a third-straight win. This time, however, the Vikings are hoping for a bit less on-field drama.
