Charges are pending against a suspect now recovering at a hospital after being shot by police in Brooklyn following a thwarted vehicle break-in on Wednesday night.
Police said the trouble began at about 8:55 pm on Jan. 6, when members of the 75th Precinct observed two men allegedly breaking into a vehicle at the corner of Georgia and Pitkin Avenues in New Lots.
At that point, law enforcement sources said, one of the two suspects, a 61-year-old man, hopped behind the wheel of a nearby van and began driving toward the two officers.
That prompted the officers to open fire, with one of the shots winding up striking the man in the leg. Officers took the other suspect into custody at the scene.
Meanwhile, the wounded perpetrator sped away in the van and engaged police in a pursuit through the streets of East New York and New Lots. The chase ended when the suspect’s van struck a police cruiser stopped at the corner of Jamaica and Pennsylvania Avenues, near the entrance to the Jackie Robinson Parkway.
Police took the unidentified suspect into custody, and paramedics brought him to Brookdale University Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are not life-threatening. The NYPD has yet to release his identity.
Two other officers injured during the episode were brought to Jamaica Hospital for treatment, law enforcement sources said.
The investigation is ongoing.
