Ten-hut! Train like a soldier at Ft. Hamilton obstacle course

Soldiers stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton will be firing a giant Howitzer cannon to signal the start of the Civilian Military Combine on Sept. 10. The hybrid obstacle course honors active-duty military personnel, first responders, and all those who live a life of athleticism, community, and patriotism. It is drawing athletes from all across the United States.

Participants can be of any age or fitness level and can race as an individual or as a team.

“Fort Hamilton welcomes the opportunity to bring the community together in healthy competition, especially where it enhances the relationship between our military members and those whom we protect, and in return, they so greatly support us,” said Donald Bradshaw, deputy to the commander, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton. “The Civilian Military Combine event provides a perfect environment for New Yorkers to share fellowship, fun, and a little bit of sweat at Fort Hamilton — ‘The Face of the Army in New York City.’ ”

The event combines CrossFit-style exercises with a five-mile, military-grade obstacle course race. The heat starts in the adrenaline-pumping strength element called the Pit, which consists of a five-minute, high-intensity, functional fitness workout consisting of three movements. The athletes’ goal is to perform as many reps as possible of all three movements in five minutes. It is followed by a five-mile race with 24-plus military-grade obstacles.
