It was a tropical storm!
Brooklynites rushed to the hibiscus-adorned aisles of Trader Joe’s on Friday to stock up on canned good and flavored hummus in anticipation of hunkering down at home through the predicted blizzard this weekend.
Customers lined up out the door and down Atlantic Avenue in freezing temperatures just to get inside the building’s Court Street entrance, where they were faced with empty shelves where potatoes, organic unsweetened rice milk, and pomegranate limeade are usually found during more temperate shopping expeditions.
The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy snowfall and strong winds with more than a foot of snow throughout the city.
Mayor DeBlasio issued a so-called “winter weather emergency” Friday afternoon, urging residents to stay indoors with their Joe-Joe’s cookies and Trader Jose beers from 8 am to midnight on Saturday.
The subway will nevertheless stay open to straphangers, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority — unlike a similar blizzard this time last year, when Gov. Cuomo shut the service and trains ran empty while riders were stranded.
The transit agency says it has an arsenal of 10 snow-throwers, seven de-icers, and four jet blowers at the ready to stop tracks from icing over.
A manager at Trader Joe’s declined to comment.
