What a couple of schmucks!
Cops are searching for two treif thieves who broke into a Midwood shul and attacked its live-in caretaker during the early hours on April 16, during the holy Jewish holiday of Passover.
The two sneaks allegedly used a ladder to climb up to a broken window and hop inside Bais Menachem Mendel on Avenue J at 5 am, police said. They demanded the 53-year-old caretaker hand over his possessions, including $300 in cash, a laptop, and a credit card — and even socked him in the head with a metal tool, causing minor lacerations, according to authorities. The punks then fled the Chabad, between E. 17th and E. 18th streets, officials said.
And the crime was particularly sacrilegious, perpetrated as it was during the eight-day holiday that celebrates the Israelites escape from ancient Egypt, said Councilman David Greenfield (D–Midwood), who is offering a $1,000 reward to catch the impious suspects.
“As we celebrate Pesach, it is especially disturbing to find out that a shul’s caretaker was assaulted and that the shul was robbed during this important holiday,” Greenfield said. “It’s more important now than ever that we unite as a community and find the hateful criminals who did this.”
Emergency responders took the victim to Maimonides Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries. And authorities are still investigating the incident, police said.
This isn’t the first time area shuls have been robbed during holy days. Another scoundrel stole four Torah scrolls worth a quarter-million dollars from Avenue O Synagogue on Oct. 25 — during Simchat Torah — which were later mysteriously returned in the middle of the night.
