VARONE VISITS DANCEWAVE

VARONE VISITS

The Kids Cafe
Festival 2002 began on Jan. 18 with a benefit performance featuring
choreographer Doug Varone’s "Strict Love."

Varone’s work is known for its vivid musicality and daredevil
physicality, so the Dancewave Kids Company performance of "Strict
Love" was highly anticipated.

Taught to the young dancers by Varone company members Eddie Taketa
and John Beasant, "Strict Love" is set to radio hits
of the 1970s.

"’Strict Love’ both really challenged the dancers and brought
them to another level," said Dancewave executive and artistic
director Diane Jacobowitz of their performance Friday.

Varone, who attended the performance, formed the dance company
in 1986 and has since created more than 30 pieces for them. He
has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and five New York
Dance and Performance Awards (Bessies).

Jacobowitz said that at press time it was not known how much
money had been raised at the benefit performance at the Brooklyn
Music School Playhouse at 126 St. Felix St., but said it "looks
promising."

Kids Cafe Festival is a program of Dancewave Inc., a not-for-profit
arts and education organization founded in 1979.
