They really got into gear!
More than 150 Gerritsen Beachers came out for an antique car show to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims on Aug. 7. About 75 vintage vehicles lined Gerritsen Avenue, and locals were able to hop in, take photos, and reminisce about the days before catalytic converters and automatic transmissions, said host Evans Georgopulos, vice president of the Antique Auto Association of Brooklyn and a Gerritsen Beach resident.
“The antiques bring out the people, it’s nostalgia,” he said. “Everybody wants to see and look at the old cars. I remember them when my father was driving.”
Owners all took home trophies for their rollin’ oldies, and four judges named a 1956 Chevy Bel Air the “Best in Show,” said Georgopulos.
And a 1964 Buick Skylark that played a background part in the 1990 film “Goodfellas” really got people’s motors running, said Gerritsen Beacher Christian Boday.
“Everybody loved the car, everybody kept talking about it,” he said. “We got a while ago from a friend in the neighborhood. My dad bought it and he loved it. There were people lining up to get it and he was like, ‘We gotta grab it before somebody else does.’ ”
Organizers raised about $1,500 for Sandy victims that it will donate to recovery group Gerritsen Beach Cares, said Georgopulos.
