A gunman shot a Queens woman to death in Brooklyn on Monday night in a drive-by shooting while she attended a vigil for a previous murder victim, police reported.
Shalimar Birkett, 32, of Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway was gunned down in front of an apartment building at 1769 Park Place in Weeksville at about 11:01 pm on May 17.
According to published reports, Birkett sustained a fatal gunshot to her head fired from an unknown individual in a white sedan. The victim had participated in a vigil just moments earlier in memory of another recent victim of gun violence.
Officers from the 73rd Precinct and EMS units responded to Monday’s shooting. EMS rushed Birkett to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
At this point in the ongoing investigation, police have not yet established a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made in the case.
Meanwhile, police announced Tuesday that they had nabbed the suspected shooter who gunned down a 22-year-old man outside a public housing complex in Red Hook, Brooklyn back in December.
Tyquan Walden, 31, of Marcy Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant was arrested on May 14 on murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges for the Dec. 14, 2020 killing of Conrad Waterton, 22.
Officers from the 76th Precinct and NYPD PSA 1 found Waterton shot in the head in the courtyard of the Red Hook Houses at 493 Columbia St., just down the block from where he lived, at about 2:38 pm on Dec. 14, 2020.
Paramedics rushed Waterton to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police did not provide information about the motive for the murder, or the connection between the suspect and the victim.
