G train extension will ‘likely’ be saved, MTA board members say

A powerful-but-obscure transit panel is poised to rescue the G train — derailing a plan that would kill a much-needed line extension linking North and Brownstone Brooklyns.

The G train’s five-stop extension has gained strong support from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board, a committee tasked with deciding if the service should stay alive, members say.

The beloved but at-risk extension — which includes stations in Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, and Kensington — will likely become permanent after the committee votes next week, said board member Allen Cappelli.

“We’ve been hammering at [the cause] for months — and it looks like it’s going that direction,” he said.

He said saving the so-called Brooklyn Local is a priority due to good ridership numbers and noted that the agency is “in position to do something” financially.

“There’s a decent likelihood it will remain,” he said.

The extension brought G trains to the Fourth Avenue–Ninth Street, Seventh Avenue, Prospect Park–15th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Church Avenue stations starting in 2009 and is set to expire when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $257.5 million Culver Viaduct rehabilitation project ends next winter.

But hundreds of impassioned straphangers have jumped on board a movement to save the service, demanding the agency keep it alive.

On July 25, the MTA board is poised to allocate roughly $20 million more to citywide bus, commuter rail, and subway service — a budget that will likely include the G train extension, Cappelli said.

Charles Seaton, a spokesman for the MTA, said the agency would “neither confirm nor deny” the service will be saved, but riders and politicians are already celebrating — perhaps a bit prematurely.

“Major victory for G train riders!” Williamsburg Democratic District Leader Lincoln Restler tweeted.

This is awesome news. Brooklyn is already poised to capture the crown of creative energy & activity in the city, and having a Brooklyn subway is part of that. DUMBO, BAM, Williamsburg, and the Gowanus are already magnets in their own right, and the G train ties them together (well, more or less). All of that, working together, means more economic growth, more investment, more jobs, more tourism, higher profile, more amenities, better quality of life, etc., etc. Old-time residents who own their own homes will have property values they can retire to Florida on or leave to their heirs. They, and newer residents, will benefit from the higher quality of life that all that brings.

Sadly, people who hate change, hate their neighbours, hate people of different ethnicities or religions, and who generally hate, hate, hate, will be very unhappy. On the bright side, somewhere out there, perhaps on the other side of the Hudson River, there lies an idyllic, an almost-impossible-to-believe-it-still-exists, town called GTFO-ville. May those people go there and find happiness...

I guess that all the pedestrians and bikers will be pleased at this, but us taxpaying motorists are at the breaking point. Before the usaul hamasing remarks against me come out from the streetsblogger zealouts and impersonateurs, remember that I have already made my statement on this a while ago. It's not that I have anything against others that want to disagree with me, it was those who have actually attacked for taking a different side from them. It was more like they were like fanatics and extermists rather than just some simple bandwagoner and yesmen in that they were looking for those who weren't on their side and acted as if they were pointing a gun at me to either agree with me or die. Some of them didn't like it when I used facts to disproove them on their statements. Most of them had responded with either some blanket statement that was already mentioned by either the politicians or developers, while others just got very defensive or tried to dodge the question. They felt as if my questions on their attitude was a humilation and hurting their acts of fanaticisim on projects, so they demanded a ban all b/c they couldn't answer it as quickly as I could. Some of them were against bringing up some projects or other issues up for a debate, b/c they were afraid that they would have nothing to rebuttle with other than what they started with. As for the statement on me bing stupidier than Joe the Plumber, I am not for the status quo of taxaition based on income, which he is. I had actually heard what he mentioned, and he claims that the progressive tax motives are a punishment to who he claims are climbing up the social ladder, which I don't believe. I am tired of the rich getting away with so many tax breaks making those with a lower income pay more. Therefore, your reference of using that on me is wrong on all levels.

On a side note, Other Michaekl and other poeple that don't seem to like those such as myself who can disproove their statements with actual facts where they are just throwing talking points that I can easily refute. These are people who believe that it's the weapon that makes them stronger when in fact that isn't always true. Eventually, they will come to a point where even their own weapons can't save them. The truth is that it's not the weapons that makes the person stronger, it's the one who uses them. An example of someone who had to learn it the hard way was King Phillip II, who was the king of Spain, when having the Spanish Armada against England's Queen Elizabeth I in 1588. Before then, Spain was said to have the most powerfull navy at the time especially when they have sailed to numerous corners of the globe in conquering lands. Many of thought that trying to fight the armada was asking for a tombstone b/c of how powerfull they were. However, the fleet was not prepared for the English Channel, and their ships were too big for a body of water with such a low depth for them. Although the English fleet had smaller ships, it was easier to get by and with the cannon, they didn't even have to board the enemy fleet but just fire from their own. Some of those who helped fight for England in that battle included explorers such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Franciss Drake managing the fleets. As Elizabeth walked out on the cliffs of Dover, she saw the armada on fire in the humiliating defeat on Spain. It showed that even the greatest had their demise. How it relates to my point is that some just can't seem to take it when someone can find a way to poke holes in their statements by finding facts and other stats that disproove theirs' when they don't even come up with anything to back them except for repititions. Also, the reference of the Spanish Armada is to show that even the greatest can just be human at sometimes in that nobody is invincible and there will always be a clink somewhere in that armor.

The good news? The G train will be saved. The bad news? Bet you dollars to donuts that in the not too distant future the F will run express, skipping Ft Hamilton Parkway and 15th Street, Smith and Ninth and Carroll St as it did in the "old" days. That will mean an extra change of trains for those going to Manhattan.... Hope I'm wrong....

Manhattan BP Scott Stringer has revived the idea of the triborough X line proposal, which would be a great addition (essentially taking the place of the long-ago-scotched Cross-Brooklyn Expressway).

This would use the existing freight tracks running from Bay Ridge all the way through Midwood (just south of the Junction between Avenues H & I) to Canarsie and Brownsville up through Queens and across the Hell Gate Bridge into the Bronx. Freight traffic on those rails is light. And there is, theoretically, enough space alongside them to accommodate some form of commuter rail. It doesn’t have to be a subway type car and could be smaller, like a light rail, but would run run above ground and intersect with nearly every subway line in the city (including the 3, L, 2/5, B/Q, F, N, D), and like the G, avoiding Manhattan altogether.

Sounds live every hipster in the city. They hate the brown people and the jews around them and just want them gone. Hipsters are the most racist people in the world. A train extension will not change that

I think hipsters just hate violent people from the thug projects and snobbish hassids.

Hipsters hate Jews because that who they give the rent check to. Hasids have been in this neighborhood forever, they will be here long after the transplants return to Ohio. All the people you want to get rifd of are the ones that really made this City great. Hipsters broguht over-priced coffee and cupcake shops. Not such a good deal for New York

I guess I am glad (hopeful) that the g train will be "saved" but really all this is a return to service levels in the 90s, maybe its me but that does not seem like a huge thing to celebrate, more like 20 years later we are still in the same situation,. Always amazes me how the MTA can waste a couple of decades of progress and call it a good thing.
