Move over, Queens car commuters.

The city’s planning commission green-lighted a new, separated bike path on the Pulaski Bridge that will take over a lane of automotive traffic and end a chaotic arrangement that has walkers sharing space with fast-moving two-wheelers. A local pol hailed the approval.

“With the upcoming creation of a dedicated bike lane on the Pulaski Bridge, pedestrians and cyclists will not only travel safer, but more efficiently,” said Assemblyman Joe Lentol, who proposed the lane change on the link between Greenpoint and its northern neighbor last year.

The bike lane will run along the Manhattan side of the bridge over Newtown Creek, running separately from the one sidewalk where bicyclists, runners, and pedestrians currently travel in both directions, sharing a tight space and struggling to avoid collisions. The rejiggering will cut car traffic from six to five lanes, which Lentol says is not necessarily a bad thing.

“Another indirect added benefit the dedicated bike lane might create involves slowing down motorists that speed southbound over the Pulaski Bridge at sometimes twice the speed limit,” he said.

The city will have a bigger challenge than usual designing this bike lane because the span the divider will run across is a drawbridge that opens and closes frequently.

Lentol said he anticipated that the city will bring the design to Community Board 1 for approval by the end of the year.

If the plan passes, construction on the bike lane will commence in the spring of 2014.

Another bike lane??? Why do mid-week/mid-day, art gallery hopping, brunch eating, infinite leisure time, bike riding lemmings get catered to?

Hopefully the first day this bike lane opens the drawbridge also accidentally opens and sends a few Calebs and Ethans to dissolve into the toxic Newtown Creek.

I either walk or ride across this bridge everyday. This is past due. The 6 car lanes are not needed, it quickly merges to 4 on both sides of the bridge.
On the other hand it is an increasingly dangerous place to walk during rush hour due to the high volume of bikes.
No matter who is riding or for what reason matters not. That they are riding in great numbers needs to be addressed. This will do nicely.

This is a complete waste of resources. If anything they should eliminate the walkway and make it into another lane for cars, since traffic on this bridge is so importantly congested it might make a difference. But you probalby think this is a bad idea because it does the opposite of what you want it to, which is to make things better for people on bike even if they don't contribute to New York the way motorists do. People who walk can take the bus or subway instead and people who bike can drive over the new space on the bridge. But don't count on common sense from the DOT right now when all we have to do is wait to see if Joe Lhota can fix things.

First of all, stop with the impersonations, because I find them to be unprofessional. Honestly, I don't see why the Pulaski Bridge needs bike lanes especially since the weather will be getting colder. During the winter, they will just be seen as nothing more than a waste of space. I would rather see money going to help the schools and hospitals that are closing due to lack of funding.

Eh, no big deal either way. I don't see a big problem with the shared ped/bike lane as it is now. Seems to have worked well enough on the GWB, QBB etc for, oh, decades now.

The problem with mixing is the "Cat 6" crowd. You know, the clowns that have never pinned a USCF number on in their entite life, but feel compelled to hammer their bikepath "competetion", even if it's neither smart nor safe to do so. Big egos at stake...

I'm a cyclist but had my first experience on this bridge as a pedestrian. Having both peds and bikes in the same small space is ridiculous and unsafe for both. This is a great improvement and well worth the small sacrifice of 1 lane of car traffic that only encourages speeding.

Also, I think Tal should go back upstate to Pleasantville and let NYC take care of its own business without commentary from outsiders.

As for saying that cars will speed with the extra traffic, I can say the same for bicycles, who will also run a number of red lights and stop signs that at least most cars do stop for. In reality, reducing lanes for vehicular traffic will actually create more traffic rather than reduce it especially since it could be harder for commercial vehicles to go through.

This is a long needed improvement. A dedicated lane straight from the Pulaski Bridge to Queensboro Bridge would keep bicyclists off heavily trafficked roads in that neighborhood and make everybody happy to get where they need to get to no matter if they can afford a car or not.

In other words, you bike zealots just didn't win my respect especially with the attitude so many of you tend to display. If you really want the rules to change then start complying to them no matter how pointless or absurd they happen to be. Then and only then can they be changed. I take great issue with people calling me stupid, just b/c I take another perspective. Do any of you know cartesian logic? Can you understand the Devil's advocate? Do you just spew haterAid when somebody undisprooves you? I just came up with one day let alone write those myself, these are figures that support my claim unlike others who just repeat what they already mentioned or act very defensive. Their result is that if they can't undebunk me, they demand that my statements be censored, and threaten me to stay out of the city, which is a hit way below the belt, even for the likes of you, Ty. As for some streetsbloggers like Ty, he slammed my with the most offensive replies that I won't Back to the issue. Given the number of trucks and cars on the road, the number of accidents is very low if you compare it to the rate in which cyclists cause accidents. Nothing to get upset about, I am just stating facts. You almost never hear about the fatal bike crashes caused by bikers even though those happen all the time.
